Bollywood’s only billionaire is none other than Ronnie Screwvala. According to DNA and publicly available data, he has an estimated net worth of $1.55 billion (approximately Rs 13,012 crore). It’s worth noting that Screwvala’s net worth surpasses the combined wealth of leading actors such as Salman Khan (Rs 3,000 crore), Aamir Khan (Rs 1,900 crore) and Shah Rukh Khan (Rs 6,600 crore). With his enormous wealth, Screwvala is estimated to be the richest person in the Hindi film industry.

Career in the entertainment business

Throughout his career, Screwvala has produced numerous projects under his production banner RSVP Movies and the now defunct UTV Films. Some of his notable works are Sam Bahadur, Uri: The Surgical Strike, Kedarnath, Chennai Express, Jodhaa Akbar and many more. He had originally established UTV Films with an investment of just Rs 37,500, and later sold the company to Walt Disney in 2012 for $454 million (approximately Rs 3,750 crore).

Humble beginnings

Before stepping into the world of showbiz, Ronnie Screwvala embarked on his professional journey by establishing a toothbrush manufacturing company called Lazer Brushes. He is also known for his contribution to the growth of Cable TV in the country.

Entrepreneurial ventures

In 2015, Ronnie Screwvala, along with Mayank Kumar and Phalgun Kompalli, co-founded UpGrad. According to News18, the Ed-tech company invested Rs 300 crore in 2022 to acquire Harappa Education, which is currently valued at around $2.25 billion (approximately Rs 18,650 crore). Over the years, Screwvala has invested his wealth in various companies such as Usports and Unliazer.

Philanthropic work

Ronnie Screwvala and his wife Zarina Screwvala established The Swades Foundation, which aims to uplift the underprivileged sections of society. The foundation also works to improve issues related to water, sanitation, education and health in the Raigad district of Maharashtra.
