Deepika Padukone has truly carved a niche for herself in the Hindi film industry ever since she made her debut with Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 2007. And post Cocktail in 2012, she has risen to a whole together different level of success and popularity. But with great power not only comes great responsibility but great amount of trolling too.
Here are the instances when the actress faced brutal social media backlash for the statements she made:
Deepika Padukone and her ‘My Choice’ short film
Directed by Homi Adajania, this short film featured the actress along with the montages of many other women and it was all about their empowerment. Deepika Padukone breaks silence
Commenting on the same during the promotions of her film Piku in 2015, she responded to the severe criticism and said, “ Mixed reactions did not bother me. It was a bit disappointing to know that certain lines were pulled out of context and blown completely out of proportion and we missed the larger point that the film was trying to make… And then in the process accusing me endorsing infidelity, I found that a bit silly, honestly.”
She added, “I never have endorsed infidelity. I know what the institution of marriage means to me, It is extremely holy and sacred. I am someone, who completely believes in being faithful and honest and in trust. It is an institution I truly believe in. I am not defending anything, people are right in their place if they have an issue with it. I just felt disappointed that they felt I am endorsing certain things that I do not.”
Deepika Padukone and her open relationship remark
There was no other celebrity last year who was trolled as scathingly as Deepika after she made an appearance on Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee With Karan with Ranveer Singh. And revealing how the relationship began, the actress told the filmmaker, “I did meet other people, but I wasn’t interested or excited by anyone else that I was seeing. In my mind, I was committed to him. So I would meet other people but at the back of my head, it was like, I am going back to him.”
The calling out and slut shaming grew to the point of Bollywood stars like Twinkle Khanna and Vir Das jumping into Deepika’s defense and standing by the words that came out of her mouth.
Here’s how X reacted when this statement dropped on the show:
When Deepika Padukone wanted to have babies with Vin Diesel
Deepika and Vin Diesel came together for the 2017 Hollywood film XXX: Retrun of Xander Cage and when the actress made an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Padukone said this about Diesel, “There is no fire without smoke… But, it’s all in my head! So yeah, I mean in my head I think, like yeah, we are together and we have this amazing chemistry, and we live together and we have these amazing babies! But it’s all in my head.”
Netizens react
One wrote- “I’m all up for casual flirting but after a guy proposed to you for marriage is a big red flag. This may be for movie promotions but still..” Another said, “Apparently every other thing is in her head except power of remembering.” A third netizen said, “This girl seems dim when she talks. She’s neither articulate nor funny. It’s better if she sticks to a script whenever she opens her mouth in these situations.”
Deepika Padukone on her definition of feminism
During the promotions of her film Fighter, the actress said, “But to complete my thought, you never anyway never do anything alone. I don’t think women can succeed without men and men can’t succeed without women. I think we need to rephrase the definition of feminism.”
